Kids and Birthday Return Gifts

I was reading an article on birthday return gifts and I thought this meant you receive birthday gifts that did not fit; you did not like or just did not need and you would return them.
This is NOT what "birthday return gifts" mean in this day and age at all.

I was surprised when my daughter started having birthday parties for her son and she had to go to the expense of buying what they call "goody bags" for each kid attending the party to take home with them as a "return gift from the birthday kid.
Without being judgmental, the parents hit the Dollar Store and purchase little stuff that the kids look at and put aside. When in the world did this get started?  Not only do parents have all of the expense of throwing big elaborate theme birthday parties; now, they have to buy a return gift for every kid who shows up at the party.

How unnecessary and how inappropriate is that!   We try to teach kids about giving to others and then along come a birthday party where the parents are saying "you should not give unless you receive something back in return".
Is that what is being said?    I also read about teenagers birthday party where the teens thought their return gift should cost as much as the gift given to them.

Do parents compete with other parents in throwing big themed birthday parties? Sometimes they do and sometimes they do not.

I can remember the days when kids would invite their friends over to their house for ice cream and cake, a few games and the birthday kid opened their gifts.
The main planning event these days is: where are we going to have the party? It seems parents have chosen not to have 10-20 kids running through the homes and making a mess.

Do you blame them? Did you know there are even kids birthday planners you can hire that take care of all details, including the "birthday return gifts"?  As long as the kids have birthday parties they can stow in their memories as a fun event, it really does not matter what the parents chose to do to provide this for their kids.
